| Check Your Equipment |
Always check your equipment before you use it.
Check that hardware is not loose, check handles, and trim any
frayed wick or wire.
Check split ring by handle for over stretching.
Check condition of wire and connection to wick.
Check ball chain links and all screws.
Fire blanket, damp blanket, appropriate fire extinguishers and
first aid kit etc. should all be readily available. This will
also include checking first aid box is fully stocked and fire
extinguishers are pressurized and ready for use.
|
| Check the Area
|
- Remove debris. If you slip and fall the fire will come with
you
- Don’t play near anything flammable (Dry leaves, shrubs,
cars, dogs, etc)
- BOOM! Don’t perform anywhere
near your fuel area. Should be common sense, but believe me,
people have done dumber things.
- Likewise, no smoking near fuel area. If you smoke, don’t
do it here.
|
| Your Safety
|
- Never alone! Absolutely, and I mean it, positively do not
mess with fire alone. Make sure you have a safety person you
trust holding a wet towel and watching you at all times.
- Friends aren’t enough, make sure your safety is trained
beforehand on how to extinguish your props, and of course how to
extinguish you.
- Make sure they see you! Never light up without making eye
contact with your safety person.
- Agree on a safety word. Most of us use “HOLD!” When your
safety person screams this, stop moving. Really, stop moving,
you’re probably on fire or worse.
- Polyester is not always a good thing. Don’t wear anything
that could catch fire or melt. Stick with heavy cottons, denim,
and leather.
|
| Safety for Others
|
- Don’t try this at home. Please don’t encourage others to
try this sort of thing on their own. Explain the dangers, and
the practice involved before using real fire.
- Stand back! Don’t perform too close to people. Establish a
safety perimeter and if anyone wanders in during your
performance stop what you’re doing until they leave. Have your
safety yell the safety word if anyone walks in.
- No people near fuel area. Don’t let them near it.
|
|
And most importantly, if you’re
inexperienced, unsure, or just overly nervous. Don’t do it! |
