| My name is Benji Humphries. Im a
professional fire performer from the Louisville, KY area. I spin fire poi as well as
eat/breathe fire. I also enjoy performing small torch manipulation tricks with my fire
wands. For enquiries on hiring me for your event please see my Booking Info.
I have been performing for nearly 4 years and
constructing fire props for just as long. Over the years I have developed my designs and
watched some fail miserably while others stood the test of time. I am now confident enough
and have sold enough of my products at festivals and to other performers that I am ready
to offer them online. My products are superior quality at reasonable prices.
All products on this site are hand crafted and
carefully constructed to ensure long-life and durability as well as a beautiful appearance
even unlit. I make each item personally and if it doesnt come together the way I
want it on the first try I take it apart and start over. I value quality over mass
production and take pride in my craft.
Youll see many sites boasting Kevlar wicks
on their products. Kevlar is actually the brand name for the company that makes the
material and the para-aramid glass-fiber wick I use in all of my products is a comparable
material. Ive worked with both Kevlar and the wick I currently use and can not
tell a difference in durability or lifespan of the wick. I buy from a small supplier
operated out of Portland Oregon with some of the best bulk wick prices online.
I also use a steel construction on my poi to ensure the
longest life possible. The #20 ball chain in my poi is the strongest available and is
quickly becoming an industry standard.
My fire staves are made with a solid oak core to
prevent warping which occurs with several metal staves. I attach the wick to 7
lengths of copper pipe which are then fitted to each end of the staff with no visible
hardware. The copper pipe will not come loose or wiggle. It is attached solidly to the oak
using a pair of steel plugs through the wood and the width of the pipe. I cover this all
with silver foil tape for a more attractive appearance and to protect the wood of the rest
of the staff. The middle section is wrapped in heavy duty athletic tape with approximately
a foot of leather grip in the center.
